Differentiating Various Types of Hydraulic Hoses & Fittings from One Another

Hydraulic hoses operate or move a piece of machinery using the power of compressed hydraulic fluid. Hose fittings used in hydraulic systems are connected to and facilitate the transfer of hydraulic power to, another device. Depending upon the source of connection a, hydraulic hose and assembly can be classified such as O-ring, crimp ferrules, threaded, pipe, flanges and stand pipe. The standards related to the use of these hose fittings on machinery are established by the Society of Automated Engineers (SAE).

Some of the standard types of fittings include:

  • SAE Flanges –
are a category of high-pressure hydraulic fittings manufactured in compliance with SAE J518 standards. These are typically used for tube fittings larger than an inch in size. Flanges can be further classified as welding neck flanges, slip-on flanges, socket welding flanges, lap joint flanges, threaded flanges, blind flanges, specialty flange, expander flange, long weld neck flanges or reducing flanges.
  • BSP
BSP is an acronym for British Standard Pipe. British Standard Pipe refers to a set of specifications related to screw threads. The BSP standard has seen wide adoption on a global scale. The BSP standard does not apply in the United States, where the NPT standard is utilized. The BSP standard specifies the manufacturing details related to the connection of pipes and fittings in conjunction with male and female threads.
  • O-Ring –
This type of fitting resembles an “O” with several threads that are screwed into the pipe or the hose fitting to provide a secure connection. The rings are designed to hold a pressure of 2,500 to 3,000 psi. O-ring fittings are deployed with the ORFS system which is based on the male thread coupled with an O-ring to sit against the flat seated female fitting.
  • JIC
This flared connection type of fitting is used for high-pressure assemblies that are usually found in fluid power applications such as fuel delivery and can accommodate pressure ratings of up to 10,000 psi. As is common in flared connection systems the seal is based on a connection between the fitting and the internal diameter of the flared hose. JIC fittings are typically constructed from the following materials; forged carbon steel, forged stainless steel, forged brass, machined brass and nickel-copper alloys.
