How Does the Direction of the Generated Stroke Affect the Operation of a Hydraulic Cylinder?

A hydraulic cylinder is a critical hydraulic component.   • Single Acting

In hydraulic cylinders that function as single acting, operating stroke is only generated in one direction; whereas, with the return stroke it is created by the load, spring or some other exterior force. The working stroke for these cylinders can be created either through cylinder extraction, making the cylinder a push cylinder, or through cylinder contraction. Cylinders with this featurearealso known as pull cylinders.

  • Double Acting

Hydraulic cylinders with the double acting feature have two opposite facing piston surfaces that control the application of force to the hydraulic liquid. The hydraulic energy in these cylinders is converted through the compression of the hydraulic fluid into mechanical energy used to generate movement of the pistons. Pistons usually have separate connections that enable movement in both directions allowing the force to be applied in both directions.

How these features are used in telescopic cylinders?

Telescopic cylinders are usually single–acting, but there are also double–acting telescopic cylinders available.Telescopic cylinders or multi-stage cylinders are composed of several cylinders stacked on top of each other, and the cylinder barrel also acts as a piston rod. These custom hydraulic cylinders can have two, three, four, five, or even six stages. Mostly, these are used where the cylinder installation length is less than the required stroke.
